How many of you are looking to save money? How many live by the motto, “Presentation Matters”? Clothing states who you are to the world. Your car and its maintenance do the same to a broader audience, whether you realize it or not. What do you want your car to communicate?
Buffing a car makes a presentable exterior and helps preserve the paint. A car buff affects the car’s looks by enhancing the shine and smoothing out blemishes in the paint. Three benefits of buffing your car are:
- Erasing scratches off the exterior
- Fix several paint maladies
- Offer a gloss and glisten to the vehicle
You can rid scratches in the appearance, fix any pesky paint issues, and cut through the rigid layers of the elements. Your car has an excellent polish, which can add life to the paint job before rust emerges and devalues the car. No doubt – your vehicle would benefit.
The price of buffing a whole car can be subject to variation depending on the business you choose to use. For example, the average cost to buff an entire car in 2022 is an estimated $3,500. Again, each dealership and private business is free to set prices, so keep in mind this is a general number.
Spending thousands of dollars on a buff job sounds daunting, but rest assured that not every car buffing costs that much. Many considerations come into play. Those factors are:
- The severity of the scratches
- Number of scratches or dents
- Damage already made in the paint
A single scratch on a car’s exterior is cheaper to resolve than the whole car. Typically there is a range between $150 to $300 for minor scratches and dents. The keyword here is minor. However, that price range does not refer to major repairs on scratches.
Often the terms buff and polish are used interchangeably by individuals who do not recognize that there is a distinction between the two; however, they are incredibly similar. These are two different services.
Earlier, I went over what buffing a car does. Polishing a car involves typically using a high-grit abrasive that is done before buffing. To request both services would be in the price range of $20 – $50 an hour. Larger vehicles would cost more for such services.
Cutting the paint is done to help rejuvenate the shine of the top protective coats on the car’s exterior. The protective coat acts as a sealant, making cutting worth your time. However, the term cutting is used interchangeably with paint correction, so either term can get you an idea of prices.
Wet sanding is a dual process of sanding down the car while employing a liquid to clear away residue at the same time and is your vehicle’s best defense against UV rays. This is a bit more labor intensive and used for extreme, stubborn scratches that will not budge. With this option, prices are at least a couple of hundred dollars minimum. Cost will fluctuate depending on skill level of detailers and product used.
Most individuals will not need to repaint their cars frequently. Typically reasons why someone would need to repaint would be:
- Desire different color
- Wanting to increase chances of selling
- Severe rust or damage to original paint
- Adding special designs
However if you find yourself repainting your car, the costs run from $350 on the lower end of a cheap budget paint job up to $10,000 for a high quality top of the line treatment. If you are aiming for the end product to be somewhere in the middle, the price would be around the $5,000 mark.
Look in your area for any business that specializes in car detail. Many auto mechanic shops may offer these services, but primarily look for an auto detailing business because they would have a specialty in that area of care for the car. That ensures better quality service.
If you are short on time, some major grocery stores offer auto services like Wal-Mart so that you can shop, but the quality may not be the same as if you went directly to an auto detailer to buff and wax your car. Car washes are also an option that often offer buffing and waxing services if you are conserving your time.
If you are looking for a place to go, we recommend the following five:
The time length depends on the size of your car. To simply do a quick buff of a car, that would roughly be around an hour. Other detailing services will be more time-consuming.
In short, buffing your car is worth it because how it helps your car maintain its paint job for longer. This means that your car is better protected from the elements. You may even be able to ask for a higher price if you decide to sell your car.
There is debate on which is better. There is not really a right or wrong. For best results, both services should be utilized. However if you are able, choosing one of them is better than the average car owner and will help the longevity of the paint job.
