Is Subaru Discontinuing the Crosstrek in 2022?

When Subaru introduced the Crosstrek in 2013, many drivers saw it as little more than a lifted Impreza. Yet, since its release, the Crosstrek has steadily increased in popularity.

Unfortunately, Crosstrek reviews aren’t always positive or glowing. Therefore, if you’ve seen a bad review recently, you might be wondering if Subaru is discontinuing the Crosstrek in 2022.

Fortunately, Subaru is not discontinuing the Crosstrek. Instead, the 2022 model hit dealerships earlier this year.

About the Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover built around the Impreza Sport.

Subaru released the Crosstrek in 2013 with many of the same specs as the Impreza 5-door hatchback.

The most notable differences are the raised suspension, standard roof rails, and 17-inch wheels.

The Crosstrek was Subaru’s replacement for the Outback Sport, another beefed-up Impreza.

In 2011, when Subaru discontinued the Outback Sport, the company unveiled the Crosstrek.

The crossover was an ideal option for drivers who liked the Impreza’s size but wanted more off-road functionality. The added lift provided precisely that.

In 2017, the Crosstrek moved to Subaru’s Global Platform, the modular platform behind all Subaru models. The SGP provided added stability and durability to each of Subaru’s vehicles.

As of 2022, all of Subaru’s cars are on the SGP.

Is Subaru Still Making the Crosstrek?

Since Crosstrek sales continue to increase yearly, Subaru is still making the small crossover. The company released the 2022 model in early 2022.

Although it was a late release for a new model year, Subaru has no plans to discontinue it.

The Crosstrek’s 2023 model should be on dealer’s lots in the summer of 2022.

With that release comes the new Special Edition that features many high-end features.

Is the Subaru Crosstrek Reliable?

One of the reasons Subaru retains customers is because it makes reliable vehicles.

The Crosstrek is no exception, as it lives up to Subaru’s reputation flawlessly.

Consumer Reports gave the crossover a 5/5 for reliability and ranked it first for subcompact crossovers.

The Crosstrek stands out regarding fuel economy, handling, and driver satisfaction.

It also has a lengthy list of safety features, including pedestrian detection, rear-seat reminder, and driver assist.

What Is Wrong With Subaru Crosstrek?

Overall, Subaru is a reliable automaker that makes high-quality, long-lasting vehicles. For that reason, there are very few complaints about the Subaru Crosstrek.

There are a few notable exceptions regarding the Subaru Crosstrek, though.

Oil Consumption Recall

An oil consumption recall was one of the most significant issues the Crosstrek and other models had in recent years. Certain vehicles were consuming oil more quickly than necessary.

As a result, a recall for the 2012-2015 model years went out in 2015.

Although the original recall was for pistons and oil rings, Subaru ultimately began replacing the entire engine block.

A problem many owners ran into after the recall repair was a leaking valve cover gasket. However, that was a relatively simple fix.

Power

Another complaint many drivers have is with the Crosstrek’s lack of power. The early models only received 148 horsepower.

Compared to its WRX sibling, having such a low-powered vehicle was a bit jarring.

As of 2021, Subaru gave the Crosstrek a more powerful engine. The 2.5-liter engine gets approximately 182 horsepower.

It’s a modest improvement, although some drivers would prefer more.

But, despite the lack of power, the Crosstrek is still an excellent off-road option.

Head Gasket

An issue Subaru has almost always suffered from is blown head gaskets. Your head gasket keeps your oil and coolant flowing correctly.

When it doesn’t function properly, you could end up with an overheated engine.

If you allow your engine to overheat or ignore the white smoke coming from your exhaust, you could be in for an enormous repair bill.

A head gasket on its own is one of the priciest repairs you can incur.

If you let the problem worsen, your maintenance cost will increase even further.

Is Subaru Discontinuing the Crosstrek Hybrid?

Subaru’s XV Crosstrek Hybrid was released for the 2013 model year. Unfortunately, the model didn’t gain much popularity, so Subaru discontinued it in 2016.

In 2019, Subaru announced its new Crosstrek Hybrid. This plug-in hybrid gets approximately 480 miles to a tank of gas and 90 MPGe.

However, the Crosstrek Hybrid has limited availability. Currently, it’s only available in states that mandate zero-emission vehicles.

As of 2022, the only states that mandate ZEVs are:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Washington

Subaru currently doesn’t have any plans to discontinue the new Crosstrek Hybrid. However, due to most states’ restrictions, many customers who want the Crosstrek Hybrid can’t purchase one.
