10 Discontinued Cars We Dream of Bringing Back

Car models might come and go, but that doesn’t mean they are all removed from the market when they should be. Usually, the manufacturer decides to move on to brighter and better things, so they discontinue a model.

We went to a popular internet forum to learn which discontinued cars people want to be brought back immediately. At least some of these can be found on the pre-owned market.

Toyota Celica

The Toyota Celica is a two-door sports car produced from 1970 until 2006. The Celica name derives from the Latin coelica, meaning heavenly or celestial.

In 1973, Toyota coined the term liftback to describe the Celica fastback hatchback. This vehicle was discontinued in 2005 due to a massive fifty percent drop in sales from the previous year.

Honda Element

The Honda Element is a compact crossover SUV manufactured from 2003 to 2011. It is well known because of its boxy exterior styling. It became a reliable daily driver for many needing a practical, dependable vehicle. The crossover did not last long and was eventually discontinued because of declining sales.

Mitsubishi Galant

The Mitsubishi Galant is an automobile that was produced from 1969 until 2012. The model name was derived from the French word galant, meaning “chivalrous.”

There have been nine distinct generations with total cumulative sales exceeding five million units. Unfortunately, interest began to wane, and Mitsubishi decided that the production costs were too expensive to justify continuing to manufacture the Galant.

Chevy Caprice

The Chevrolet Caprice is a full-sized automobile manufactured from 1965 to 1996. It was the most popular car in the U.S. in the 1960s and early 1970s. The vehicle ended production in May 2017 due to the planned closing of the GM-Holden Elizabeth factory in South Australia, where the Caprice is assembled.

Dodge Viper

The Dodge Viper is a sports car that was first manufactured in 1992. It took a brief hiatus in 2007 and from 2010 to 2012 before stopping production in 2017.

Initially, Fiat Chrysler cited poor sales as a reason for discontinuing the Viper; however, other sources have stated the car was discontinued because the Viper could not comply with the safety regulation that requires side curtain airbags.

Mitsubishi Lancer

The Mitsubishi Lancer was first introduced in 1973 and stopped production worldwide in 2017 (however, it can still be purchased in Taiwan and China). As efficiency and versatility became increasingly important to consumers, Mitsubishi focused on crossover vehicles worldwide to meet customer demand.

Volkswagen Eos

The Volkswagen Eos is a sport compact cabriolet coupé produced from 2006 to 2015. The name Eos derives from the Greek goddess of the dawn. With sales declining, Volkswagen elected not to migrate the model to a more current platform, as a redesign would have proven too costly.

Chevrolet Chevelle

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile produced by Chevrolet from 1964 through 1978. This vehicle was one of Chevrolet’s most successful nameplates with various body styles, including coupes, sedans, convertibles, and station wagons. A couple of the primary reasons cited for discontinuation were the company’s need to focus on its brand and cut costs.

Eagle Summit

The Eagle Summit is a line of subcompact cars produced from 1989 to 1996. It is a three-door hatchback minivan built on a Jeep frame and is said to last a long time. However, after a decade of slow sales, Chrysler was forced to announce the discontinuation of the Eagle brand.

Nissan Xterra

Finally, the Nissan Xterra is a truck-based compact SUV manufactured from 1999 to 2015. It was discontinued due to poor fuel economy, declining sales, and mandated upgrades to safety and emissions.

Following a five-year hiatus, the Nissan X-Terra returns with a hyphen in its name. However, it’s not the Xterra you used to know, as the SUV now has three rows, raised LED headlights and taillights, and an updated grille.
